second (time) In SI units, the base unit used for measuring time, abbreviated to ‘s'. It was once defined as 1/86 400 of the mean solar day, which is the average time it takes for the Earth to rotate relative to the Sun. Now it is defined in terms of the radiation emitted by the caesium-133 atom.
