self-selected samples (self-selection) Self-selection involves, probably unintentionally, creating a sample from a survey, say, where the likelihood or ability to respond means that the sample is unlikely to be random and so biased. For example, where a newspaper, radio, or television station asks those interested to respond, the results are likely only to reflect the most strongly held opinions, and the results are virtually worthless.
