Shannon, Claude (1916–2001) Regarded as the father of information theory, he wrote the seminal 1948 paper A Mathematical Theory of Communication which introduced the idea of (Shannon) entropy and showed it to be a constraint on how quickly information can be transmitted. See Shannon's Theorem.
