trivial solution The zero solution of a homogeneous set of linear equations and, more generally, the zero solution for other homogeneous linear equations (or systems of equations), for example, y = 0 for the differential equation dy/dx = y. The term extends to relatively straightforward solutions for difficult equations; for example, the solutions –2, –4, –6,… are known as the trivial solutions of the zeta function.
