Turing, Alan Mathison (1912–54) British mathematician and logician who conceived the notion of the Turing machine and famously gave a negative answer to Hilbert's decision problem. During the Second World War, he was involved in cryptanalysis, the breaking of codes, and afterwards worked on the construction of some of the early digital computers and the development of their programming systems.
