mechanics The study of the behaviour of systems of particles or rigid bodies acted on by forces, whether in equilibrium or in motion. Classical mechanics is restricted to systems where Newton's laws of motion are adequate—broadly speaking, any system where great gravity or speeds are not encountered, where the general and special theories of relativity apply. See also quantum theory.
