virtual work principle (in mechanics) A virtual displacement in a mechanical system in which fixed holonomic constraints apply is an infinitesimal displacement of the system which is compatible with the constraints. In such a system, the work done by the forces of constraint (such as internal forces in a rigid body) in any virtual displacement is zero. The principle of virtual work states that system is in equilibrium if the virtual work done by the applied forces (such a gravity) in any virtual displacement is zero.
