Wallis, John (1616–1703) The leading English mathematician before Newton. His most important contribution was in the results he obtained by using infinitesimals, developing Cavalieri's method of indivisibles. He also wrote on mechanics. Newton built on Wallis's work in his development of calculus and his laws of motion. It was Wallis who first made use of negative and fractional indices. He was instrumental in the founding of the Royal Society in 1662.
