Atiyah, Sir Michael Francis (1929–2019) British mathematician who made important contributions in algebraic topology, algebraic geometry, index theory, and quantum field theory. His index theorem (with Isadore Singer) shows the deep connections between the topology of compact manifolds and elliptic differential equations on such spaces. Awarded the Fields Medal in 1966 and the Abel Prize in 2004.
