Basel problem First posed in 1650, the Basel problem was to evaluate the sum 1−2 + 2−2 + 3−2 + 4−2 + …. The problem was resolved by Euler, whose hometown was Basel, in 1734; he showed the sum equals π2/6. He further evaluated the sum of the reciprocals of all even powers.
