Berkeley, George (1685–1753) An Irish philosopher, commonly referred to as Bishop Berkeley. In mathematics, he is best known for his critique of calculus in The Analyst, published in 1734. He rightly criticized the lack of any rigorous foundations of calculus, a situation which would not be fully resolved for at least another century.
