conjecture A mathematical statement which has yet to be proved or disproved but which is suspected to be true on the basis of special cases of the conjecture and/or on the basis of computations. Many famous open problems involve the term conjecture, such as Goldbach's conjecture, and some still involve the term even though they are now proved, such as the Weil conjectures and the Poincaré conjecture.
