Napier's bones An invention by Napier for carrying out multiplication. It consisted of a number of rods made of bone or ivory, which were marked with numbers from the multiplication tables. Multiplication using the rods involved some addition of digits and was very similar to the familiar method of long multiplication. Logarithms were not involved at all.
