Frege, (Friedrich Ludwig) Gottlob (1848–1925) German mathematician and philosopher, founder of the subject of mathematical logic. In his works of 1879 and 1884, he developed fundamental ideas, invented the standard notation of quantifiers and variables, and studied the foundations of arithmetic. Not widely recognized at the time, his work was disseminated primarily by Peano and Russell.
