Liouville, Joseph (1809–82) Prolific and influential French mathematician, who was founder and editor of a notable French mathematical journal and proved important results in the fields of number theory, differential equations, differential geometry, and complex analysis. In 1842 he began reading Galois' unpublished work and did much to make his work known. In 1844, he proved the existence of transcendental numbers (see Liouville numbers).
