Lakatos, Imre (1922–74) Hungarian philosopher of mathematics, best known for his book Proofs and Refutations in which he discusses the nature of progress in mathematical understanding. There Lakatos, as a challenge to formalism, posits that theories evolve in light of so-called ‘local counterexamples', by which he means that formal definitions and statements need to be tweaked to include or exclude such a refutation.
