Leibniz, Gottfried Wilhelm (1646–1716) German mathematician, philosopher, scientist, and writer on a wide range of subjects, who was, with Newton, the founder of the calculus. Newton's discovery of differential calculus was perhaps ten years earlier than Leibniz's, but Leibniz was the first to publish his account, written independently of Newton, in 1684. Soon after, he published an exposition of integral calculus that included the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus. He also wrote on other branches of mathematics, making significant contributions to the development of symbolic logic.
