Lie, (Marius) Sophus (1842–99) (pronounced ‘lee') Norwegian mathematician responsible for advances in differential equations and differential geometry, and primarily remembered for a three‐volume treatise on transformation groups. Like Klein, he brought group theory to bear on geometry. See Lie correspondence.
