Pauli, Wolfgang Ernst (1900–58) Austrian theoretical physicist. He introduced the notion of spin (relating to angular momentum) into quantum theory and demonstrated the Pauli exclusion principle, which states that two electrons (or more generally particles with half-integer spin) cannot occupy the same quantum state, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1945.
