longitudinal study A study of the development of characteristics of the same individuals over a period of time. If different groups are studied simultaneously at different ages, it is difficult to attribute observed differences to any factor, so longitudinal studies are designed to remove the individual differences in an analogous manner to paired‐sample tests.
