potential infinity In the philosophy of mathematics, a distinction is made between ideas of actual and potential infinities. For example, the natural numbers begin 1,2,3,…. Even in a finitist philosophy, it is recognized that this list does not end, but such a philosophy would exclude discussion of the actual infinity of how many natural numbers there are, as a mathematical object, that might be calculated with as Cantor did.
