pure mathematics The area of mathematics concerning the relationships between abstract systems and structures and the rules governing their behaviours, motivated by its intrinsic interest or elegance rather than its application to solving problems in the real world. Much modern applied mathematics is based on or employs what was once viewed as esoteric pure mathematics when it was devised. For example, matrix algebra has applications as diverse as computer graphics, quantum theory, Internet searches, and meteorology.
