radius of gyration The square root of the ratio of a moment of inertia to the mass of a rigid body. Thus, if I is the moment of inertia of a rigid body of mass m about a specified axis, and k is the radius of gyration, then I = mk2. It means that, when rotating about this axis, the body has the same moment of inertia as a ring of the same mass and of radius k.
