rank (in statistics) The observations in a sample are said to be ranked when they are arranged in order according to some criterion. For example, numbers can be ranked in ascending or descending order, people can be ranked according to height or age, and products can be ranked according to their sales. The rank of an observation is its position in the list when the sample has been ranked. Non-parametric methods frequently make use of ranking rather than the exact values of the observations in the sample.
