multinomial theorem

A multinomial is a mathematical expression consisting of two or more terms, e.g.

$$a_1{x}_1+a_2{x}_2+\mathrm{\dots }+a_k{x}_k.$$

The multinomial theorem provides the general form of the expansion of the powers of thisexpression, in the process specifying the multinomial coefficients which are found in that expansion. The expansion is:

$${(x_1+x_2+\mathrm{\dots }+x_k)}^n=\sum \frac{n!}{n_1!n_2!\mathrm{\cdots }{n}_k!}{x}_1^{n_1}{x}_2^{n_2}\mathrm{\cdots }{x}_k^{n_k}$$(1)

where the sum is taken over all multi-indices $(n_1,\mathrm{\dots }{n}_k)\in {\mathbb{N}}^k$ thatsum to $n$.

The expression $\frac{n!}{n_1!n_2!\mathrm{\cdots }{n}_k!}$ occurring in the expansion is called multinomial coefficient and is denoted by

$$\left(\genfrac{}{}{0pt}{}{n}{n_1,n_2,\mathrm{\dots },n_k}\right).$$
