Calculating overall risk of losing your investments, and coming up with ways to reduce that risk (such as having investments in different things, or buying insurance).

Example: Sam had a lot of money invested in property. There was a chance of a big loss if the property market went bad, so Sam sold half the property and put the cash in the bank.
