relative frequency The ratio n/N where n is the observed number of a particular event, and N is the number of trials. As N gets large, the weak law of large numbers says that n/N will tend to the probability of that event with a probability of 1. In cases where no way of calculating a probability exists, then the value of n/N can be used to estimate this probability. The larger the value of N, the better this statistic is as an estimator.
