Chu Shih-chieh (about ad 1300) One of the greatest Chinese mathematicians, who wrote two influential texts, the more important being Su-yuan yu-chien (‘Precious Mirror of the Four Elements'). Notable are the methods of solving equations by successive approximations and the summation of series using finite differences. A diagram of Pascal's triangle, as it has come to be called, known in China from before Pascal's time, also appears.
