Stevin, Simon (1548–1620) Flemish engineer and mathematician, the author of a popular pamphlet that explained decimal representations simply and was influential in bringing about their everyday use, replacing sexagesimal fractions. He made discoveries in statics and hydrostatics and was also responsible for an experiment in 1586 in which two lead spheres, one ten times the weight of the other, took the same time to fall 30 feet. This probably preceded any similar experiment by Galileo.
