Maupertuis, Pierre‐Louis Moreau de (1698–1759) French scientist and mathematician known as the first to formulate a proposition called the principle of least action. He was an active supporter in France of Newton's gravitational theory. He led an expedition to Lapland to measure the length of a degree along a meridian, which confirmed that the Earth is an oblate spheroid.
