Maxwell, James Clerk (1831–79) Influential Scottish mathematical physicist. Of considerable importance in applied mathematics are the differential equations known as Maxwell's equations, which are fundamental to the field theory of electromagnetism. He was also one of the first to be interested in the classification of knots.
