Tukey, John Wilder (1915–2000) American mathematician and statistician who published work in topology and on the fast Fourier transform, but it is for his work in statistics that he will be best remembered. He worked initially with time series and made contributions to the analysis of variance and resolving difficulties about making inferences about a set of parameter values from a single sample. He is perhaps best known for his 1977 book Exploratory Data Analysis which changed the basis on which data are analysed and accelerated the move away from purely parametric statistics.
