Aristarchus of Samos (about 270 bc) Greek astronomer, noted for being the first to affirm that the Earth rotates and travels around the Sun. He treated astronomy mathematically and used geometrical methods to calculate the relative sizes of the Sun and Moon and their relative distances from the Earth.
