Cayley, Arthur (1821–95) British mathematician who contributed greatly to the resurgence of pure mathematics in Britain in the 19th century. He published over 900 papers on many aspects of geometry and algebra. He conceived and developed the theory of matrices and was the first to list the axioms of an abstract group in 1849.
