control group In experimental design, the control group provides a baseline assessment of any change which might happen without the treatment under investigation. For example, in looking at the effects of using a particular diet on a child's growth between 10 and 14 we need to be able to make a comparison with the growth of other children not following that regime. The control group and experimental groups should be either allocated randomly or balanced if that is possible, to provide a fair test of the treatment.
