data logging The process of automatically collecting and storing observations, typically as a sequence in time or space. For example, in hospital an electronic monitor may record a patient's temperature, heart rate, blood pressure, etc. at regular intervals; and in aircraft, the flight data recorders, or ‘black box', constantly monitor and record data on all the aircraft's systems.
