multiplication sign The symbol × used to denote multiplication of number or any other binary operation with similar properties. Where characters and/or brackets are involved rather than just numbers, it is common to use a dot, or to use no symbol at all. So 3 × 5, 5(3 + 6), 4x2y3, x·y all contain instructions to multiply quantities together.
