developable surface A surface that can be rolled out flat onto a plane without any distortion. Examples are the cone and cylinder. This is equivalent to the surface having zero Gaussian curvature. On any map of the world, distances are inevitably inaccurate because a sphere is not a developable surface (having positive curvature).
