Donaldson, Simon (1957– ) English mathematician, who was awarded a Fields Medal in 1986 for his work on differentiable four-dimensional manifolds. His results showed that certain topological manifolds could have no differentiable structure and that four-dimensional Euclidean space could be given different ‘exotic' structures; this is unique to four dimensions.
