double negation The proposition that the negation of the negation of A is equivalent to the proposition A. In English, a double negative is not always precisely a double negation. For example, in hypothesis testing the conclusion ‘there is not sufficient evidence to suggest that the mean is not 340' is not equivalent to saying that there is evidence to suggest that the mean is 340.
