Möbius function An arithmetic function important in number theory. For a natural number n, then μ(n) equals the sum of the primitive nth roots of unity. So μ(n) = 0 if n has a repeated prime factor, and otherwise μ(n) = 1 or −1, depending on whether n has an even or odd number of prime factors.
