Eudoxus of Cnidus (about 380 bc) Greek mathematician and astronomer, one of the greatest of antiquity. All his original works are lost, but it is known from later writers that he was responsible for the work in Book 5 of Euclid's Elements. This work of his was a precise and rigorous development of the real number system in the language of his day. He also developed methods of determining areas with curved boundaries.
