field of force A vector field defined in a region where a non-contact force applies. Examples include gravitational, electric, and magnetic fields. A gravitational field represents the strength and direction of gravity, or equivalently gravitational force per unit mass. A more massive particle is acted on by a greater force, even though the field has not changed.
