Fourier, (Jean Baptiste) Joseph, Baron (1768–1830) French engineer and mathematician, best known in mathematics for his fundamental contributions to the theory of heat conduction and his study of trigonometric series. These so‐called Fourier series are of immense importance in physics, engineering and other disciplines, as well as being of great mathematical interest.
