generator (group theory) A subset S of a group G generates G if the smallest subgroup of G containing S is G itself; the elements of S may then be referred to as generators of G. Typically, we will wish S to be minimal, in the sense that no proper subset of S generates G. A cyclic group is a group which is generated by a single element.
