minimal polynomial (of a square matrix) The least degree monic polynomial which the square matrix satisfies. The minimal polynomial divides all other polynomials that the matrix satisfies and so, by the Cayley-Hamilton theorem, has degree at most the order of the matrix. A matrix is diagonalizable if and only if the minimal polynomial is a product of distinct linear factors.
