Germain, (Marie) Sophie (1776–1831) French mathematician who corresponded with Lagrange, Legendre, and Gauss under the pseudonym Monsieur Le Blanc because of prejudice against women in mathematics at the time. She did pioneering work on the modelling of elasticity and on Fermat's Last Theorem.
