Grothendieck, Alexander (1928–2014) One of the great mathematicians of the 20th century, particularly influential in the areas of algebraic geometry and category theory, winning the Fields Medal in 1966. He introduced the notion of a scheme, a generalization of a variety, generalized the Riemann-Roch theorem, and made significant progress on the Weil conjectures.
