Hairy Ball Theorem Informally, it is impossible to comb flat the hair on a ball without creating a tuft or cowlick. More formally, the theorem says that a tangent vector field on a sphere must have a singularity. This is a consequence of the Poincaré-Hopf Theorem, as the sphere has Euler characteristic 2.
