inertial mass The inertial mass of a particle is the constant of proportionality that occurs in the statement of Newton's second law of motion, linking the acceleration of the particle with the total force acting on the particle. Thus ma = F, where m is the inertial mass of the particle, a is the acceleration, and F is the total force acting on the particle. See also gravitational mass, mass, rest mass.
